Matcha Whisk (Chasen) and Holder

Essential Bamboo Tools for Matcha Preparation

Master the art of matcha with this traditional bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) and matcha whisk holder (naoshi) – two essential tools for any matcha lover or tea ceremony enthusiast.

The matcha whisk is handcrafted from a single piece of dark bamboo, featuring flexible prongs designed to froth matcha powder into a smooth, velvety foam. This chasen is a key part of the Japanese tea ceremony and works best with a wide matcha bowl, allowing for optimal whisking motion and foam creation. For ideal results, use water at a maximum of 80°C.

Proper matcha whisk storage is crucial to maintaining its shape and durability. That’s where the matcha whisk holder comes in – a black-glazed ceramic stand that helps the chasen dry evenly and prevents mold. Unlike storing it in plastic or airtight containers, using a chasen holder extends the lifespan of your whisk and keeps it ready for the next bowl.

These traditional matcha accessories not only preserve the authenticity of Japanese tea rituals but also bring functionality and elegance to your daily tea routine.

To extend its lifespan and maintain its shape, store the chasen on a dedicated stand. Avoid storing it in plastic packaging or airtight containers, as this can cause mold to form on the bamboo handle.

Do not wash the chasen in the dishwasher.

Directions for matcha preparation:

Begin by slowly whisking the matcha, gently moving the chasen’s prongs along the bottom of the bowl to thoroughly mix the matcha with water. Then, lift the chasen closer to the surface and make vigorous movements in a W or M shape for about 10-20 seconds. Remember to use only your wrist to avoid fatigue. A thin layer of foam should quickly appear on the surface. The perfect froth, known as “jasper mousse,” is achieved thanks to the many flexible bamboo prongs of the chasen. The more prongs, the easier it is to create a smooth, even foam layer. For best results, wet the broom in hot water before use and rinse after. As chasen naturally shrinks when drying, it becomes brittle and prone to damage. To prolong its life and maintain shape, store it on a special naoshistand.

Quality, colour, taste and price of matcha tea depends on many factors, such as region, rainfall and –primarily – the harvest from which the tea comes from. Matcha from the first harvest is the most delicate one because it is produced from the finest leaves that were exposed to direct sunlight only for a short period of time. Japan puts severe quality norms and the harvest volume is thus limited.
